The town of Ely
Ely (pronounced to rhyme with “freely”) is a beautiful, peaceful city in the heart of the Cambridgeshire countryside – the ideal setting for this age group.
It is 25 kilometres north of Cambridge and 120 kilometres from London.
Its magnificent cathedral, established in 1803, dominates the city and makes one of the finest and most unspoilt medieval cities in England. Many of the ancient buildings are part of King’s teaching centres and student residences.
The city centre has a traditional English feeling, with shops and a market square. With a population of only 20,000 people, Ely feels more like a village than a city – everything is close by and the atmosphere is friendly.

Where will you stay?
The King’s Ely campus offers comfortable student accommodation. As it is a campus-based programme, all students attending Sir Edward live in residences within easy walk of the course centre.
Sir Edward course accommodation:
- Central accommodation in comfortable and secure buildings
- Studio staff living on-campus, providing 24-hour supervision
- Shared bedrooms – usually between 2 to 10 students of the same gender from a mix of countries
- Bathroom and showers – shared
- Free laundry service by the college staff
- A change of bed linen once per week
The residences are in 6 different buildings within the town all just 2-10 minutes walk from the centre facilities. There are up to 150 comfortable residential beds in good-sized rooms, with separate buildings for boys and girls.
All rooms are shared but they vary between the residential houses. Most are twins only, some are rooms for up to 6 students, and a few have large dorm rooms with up to 10 beds. All bathrooms and showers are shared.
Meals
All meals are served in the magnificent mediaeval beamed dining hall. There is a wide choice of hot and cold food and a vegetarian option for every meal. Please inform us if you have special dietary requirements. Packed lunches are provided on excursion days. At bedtimes, there is also a late snack (soft drinks, cookies and cake).
The food merits special mention: the last official school inspection judged the food to be “exceptional”. Meals are nutritious, balanced and appetising. A full English cooked breakfast is available every day and a selection of hot dishes, in addition to the salad bar, is offered at lunch and supper time every day.
Laundry
Clothes laundry is provided as part of the programme. King’s Ely staff will wash students’ clothes at least once per week. Bed linen is provided at the residence and will be changed and washed once each week.

How do we keep you safe?
Sir Edward students:
- are not allowed to leave the campus unsupervised at any time
- are only allowed short periods of unsupervised time during excursions
- will start preparing for bed time by 21:00
King’s Ely is a private boarding school which teaches international students year round, so its staff are experienced in caring for children of all ages and nationalities whilst they are away from their families.
Evenings
Studio staff live in the residences, providing 24-hour care. The adult-to-student ratio is approximately 1:7 and the they are never far away if you have any questions or need help. Each evening students on the Sir Edward course will have activities organised for them by the Studio team. Students may not go off campus at any time without Studio staff and must be in their residence by 21:00 at the latest.
At all of our camps, we have high levels of staff-to-student supervision. To ensure proper supervision is maintained students must attend all lessons, activities, meals and excursions, unless they are unwell.
