Studio Cambridge’s Sir Richard programme has been very successful since beginning in 2010.

The excellent sports facilities, classrooms and accommodation are all on the beautiful Leighton Park School campus, which is only 3km from Reading town centre.

With specific afternoon options, this programme allows students the chance to focus on either
a mixed choice of activities or a dance course option, which offers dance instructors and themed activities.

The ratio of staff to students here is high. There is always a wide mix of nationalities on the camp and the maximum class size is 16.

The town of Reading

Dating from the eighth century, the town of Reading (pronounced to rhyme with “bedding”) is in the Royal County of Berkshire and situated on the River Thames. It is only 65 kilometres from central London (25 minutes by train), and 45 kilometres from London’s Heathrow airport.

Reading is a vibrant and prosperous town and is considered one of Britain’s top 10 shopping locations, with several shopping areas including the Oracle Centre. Reading is located in some of southern England’s loveliest countryside and is close to famous sights such as the River Thames, Windsor Castle, and Eton College.

What’s included?

English tuition includes:

  • 15 hours of lessons per week – 3 hours per day on 5 days
  • Mixed-nationality classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday
  • Classes always in the mornings
  • Entry test on the first Monday of the course
  • Course materials
  • Academic report from your teachers at the end of your stay
  • Certificate of Studies at the end of your stay

A choice of activity programmes:

  • English with Mixed Activities
  • English with Dance

Programmes will include:

  • 15 sessions of dance or mixed activities per week – approx 2 hours per day on 5 days
  • Sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
  • Welcome orientation of the course centre on the first Monday of your course
  • Wide choice of sports, arts & crafts, cultural and language activities 6 evenings a week – please see our Activities tab for details
  • Activities office & staff

Excursions:

  • 2 full-day excursions each week, on a Wednesday and Sunday (except on the day of your departure)
  • 1 half-day excursion each week to nearby places of interest such as Reading city centre

Accommodation and meals:

  • Please inform us if you have special dietary requirements

Airport transfers:

Meeting you at the airport on arrival and bringing you to the centre

Taking you to the airport for departure and checking you into your flight back home

Insurance:

What are your course choices?

English with Mixed Activities

A choice of 20 lessons (15 hours) per week of English lessons, typically in the mornings, with additional sports and social activities during the afternoons.

A total of 15 sessions of activities per week on the Mixed Activities programme.

English with Dance

A choice of 20 lessons (15 hours) per week of English lessons, typically in the mornings, with 10 sessions of dance classes and 5 sessions of mixed activities during the afternoons.

All dancing levels are catered for, and both boys and girls are welcome. The classes are run by qualified dance instructors and cover modern street dance and other dance styles from around the world! There will be a variety of dance workshops which will vary from week to week and may include any of the following:

  • Street dance
  • Musical theatre
  • Bollywood dance
  • Hip hop
  • Cheerleading
  • Salsa

Where will you stay?

The Sir Richard course offers comfortable student accommodation in residential buildings on the Leighton Park School campus. All students attending this camp live within an easy walk of the course centre.

Sir Richard course accommodation:

  • Central accommodation in secure and comfortable buildings
  • Studio staff in each residence, providing 24-hour supervision
  • Bedrooms for one, two, three or four students of the same gender from a mix of countries. The majority of the rooms are singles or twins
  • Bathrooms and showers in each residence – shared
  • All meals included
  • Free laundry service by the school staff once per week
  • A change of bed linen once per week

Leighton Park School is a private boarding school which teaches English students year round, so its staff are experienced in caring for children of all ages and catering for different tastes and requirements. The accommodation is provided in 4 different residential buildings on campus, all under 5 minutes walk from the centre facilities. There are up to 200 comfortable residential beds in good-sized rooms, with separate areas for boys and girls. All bathrooms and showers are shared.

Meals

All meals are served in Oakview, a large dining hall that provides lovely panoramic views over the countryside. There is a wide choice of hot and cold food and a vegetarian and non-pork option available for every meal. Please inform us if you have special dietary requirements. Packed lunches are provided on excursion days. At bedtimes, there is also a late snack (soft drinks, cookies and cake).

Children can expect a good choice of food for each meal. Meals are nutritious, balanced and appetising. A full English cooked breakfast is available every day and a selection of hot dishes, in addition to the salad bar, is offered at lunch and supper time every day.

Laundry

Clothes laundry is provided as part of the programme. Leighton Park school staff will wash students’ clothes at least once per week. Bed linen is provided at the residence and will be changed and washed once each week.

How do we keep you safe?

Sir Richard students:

  • are not allowed to leave the campus unsupervised at any time
  • are only allowed short periods of unsupervised time during excursions
  • will start preparing for bed time by 21:15

Studio staff live in the residences, providing 24-hour care. The adult-to-student ratio is approximately 1:7 and they are never far away if you have any questions or need help. To ensure proper supervision is maintained students must attend all lessons, activities, meals and excursions, unless they are unwell.

Evenings

Each evening students on the Sir Richard camp will have activities organised for them by our Studio team. Students may not go off campus at any time without Studio staff and must be in their residence by 21:45 at the latest.

Which parts of England will you get to see?

Getting to see England is a powerful aid to learning and understanding the English language – that’s why all summer camp excursions are included in the course price.

At Sir Richard, excursions are held on Wednesdays and Sundays. On Friday afternoons, students are taken into Reading town centre where they can explore and shop for souvenirs.

London

Warwick Castle

An impressive mediaeval castle where students can experience 1,000 years of history. Attractions within the castle include jousting and falconry as well as the castle’s impressive interiors,  gardens and the opportunity to climb the battlements.

Chessington World of Adventures

21/07/2021

Family theme park near London with exciting roller-coasters and rides, as well as a zoo and sea life centre. Chessington offers over 40 rides and attractions and their Zoo and Sealife centres contain over 1000 animals!

Walk through St James’ Park to Parliament Square to see Big Ben, Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Lunch in Trafalgar Square, souvenir shopping and a British Museum visit.

Students who have already visited the above locations on this course will visit the Science Museum and Covent Garden to explore the shops and watch the street entertainment.

Brighton

Students will go on a walking tour of Brighton, seeing the pier, the famous Brighton Pavilion and the unique Brighton shopping Lanes. They will also have time to shop and enjoy the rides and arcade games on the pier. Includes a visit to the sea life centre!

London

Walk through St James’ Park to Parliament Square to see Big Ben, Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Lunch in Trafalgar Square, souvenir shopping and a British Museum visit.

Students who have already visited the above locations on this course will visit the National Gallery, Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. They will also have time for souvenir shopping.

Windsor Castle

04/08/2021

Entrance into Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British Kings and Queens for almost 1,000 years. It is an official residence of Her Majesty The Queen. Souvenir shopping time is included at the end of the day.

Oxford

Walking tour of the City and University. Entrance into the famous Christ Church College and Cathedral, with the chance to see the college dining hall where Harry Potter was filmed.

Is there anything else to think about?

There are no hidden extras!

All summer camps include transfers to and from Heathrow and Stansted airports on Sundays. If you are arriving or departing on another day or from/to a different airport, we can still provide a transfer but an additional charge would be required, depending on the distance involved.
