This month our student services team interviewed Valentina and Camila.
What are your names and where are you from?
Valentina: My name is Valentina and I am from Colombia.
Camila: My name is Camila and I am also from Colombia.
Which course are you doing?
Both: We are both studying EFL 28.
So far, what do you like most about Studio?
Valentina: I really enjoy the school activities.
Camila: Me too, I like the school activities the best!
What do you think about the teaching methods that we use?
Valentina: The activities and teachers give us lots of opportunities to practise and improve our speaking, listening and writing skills. The classrooms are really well-equipped and teachers are always available to answer questions.
Camila: They are very useful, complete and help students to improve their English.
Has your English improved?
Valentina: Yes, a lot!
Camila: More than I expected!
What do you think about British people? Are they different from people in your country?
Valentina: British people are very friendly, calm, polite, and patient. You feel comfortable to express your opinion and ask different things. Colombian people are always in a hurry.
Camila: They are nice but quite different from Colombian people, the British are polite and respect your space.
What do you think of the activities we have to offer? Which ones are your favourites?
Valentina: All are really good and varied, it's possible to have a good time and meet new people.
Camila: Personally I like the activities, I just don't join in the sports, but there are people that do. I especially enjoy the food decoration and the evening activities.
What is your favourite thing about Cambridge? (and favourite place to go)
Valentina: It's a quiet city but it has many facilities, there are lots of places where you can have fun with friends in the evening and during the day. My favourite place is the city centre, it has everything you need.
Camila: It's a calm and quiet city and the people are very civilized and my favourite place to go is the city centre or Grantchester.
How is Cambridge similar/different to your city?
Valentina: Bogota is very busy and everything is a little disorganised, Cambridge is quiet and a bit tidier.
Camila: It is very different from Bogota, it is quieter, tranquil and smaller. Bogota is very big and strongly Catholic, but has lots to offer.
What do you think the advantages of living in a Homestay/Residence are?
Valentina: When living in a homestay it's possible to experiment with the different British customs that the families practice and daily life with an English family. In addition, it is a great way to improve your English.
Camila: It's great to have your clothes washed and food prepared for you as if you were at home, it's nice to come back to a familiar environment.
What do you talk about or do with your Host (family)/housemates?
Valentina: My host mother tells me about her life here and I tell her about my life in Colombia so we can compare the two cultures.
Camila: We talk about everyday topics, but I love the novelty of talking and practising English with my hosts and their parents.
What sort of food do you eat in Cambridge? Is that what you expected to eat?
Valentina: It's traditional English food, definitely what I expected, in a good way!
Camila: For breakfast I have cereal, for lunch I normally have a packed lunch and in the evenings we have traditional English food; meat, vegetables, fish and chips.
How does the food here compare to food in your country?
Valentina: It's really different, there's a lot more variety than I expected!
Camila: I like quite a lot of British food, more than I expected!
How do you travel around Cambridge and why?
Valentina: I live close to the city centre, so I travel everywhere on foot.
Camila: I travel by bicycle, because I think this is the cheapest and healthiest way to travel.
