Let's talk Cambridge business

11th May 2018

The Cambridge economy has shifted dramatically in the last 50 years. The employment landscape has evolved where more and more people are turning to self-employment to preserve their independence and secure the financial future. The city of Cambridge has seen a dramatic change in many ways, but it’s the prolific rise of Silicon Fen (the hi-tech industry around Cambridge) that has garnered global attention. In a short amount of time, this once rural city has become a beacon for entrepreneurs from all over the world.

We recently welcomed Dr. Tom Simmons from Cambridge University to Studio Cambridge. Dr Simmons delivered an exclusive lecture about how universities are changing the entrepreneurship landscape. He spoke about how his path from Cambridge University scientist to entrepreneur had been challenging. The aim of the talk was for students to get a deeper understanding of how universities have revolutionized the way spin-outs (new small businesses) get off the ground via early stage support such as intellectual property and funding. Captivated by his story, the Studio students in attendance were all Business undergraduates from Germany who were taking part in our EFL20 course. Their own business acumen and general interest in the subject was palpable and we enjoyed providing them with this experience.

Studio Cambridge is incorporating more of these Cambridge University talks into our programmes. They will be featured within our Intensive English languages programmes as well as becoming a big summer attraction as part of our Cambridge University discovery camps.

Richard Mountford, Operations Director at Studio commented:

“We are fortunate to live in a vibrant city at the forefront of scientific research and innovation. We want to provide Studio students of all ages the opportunity to learn from Cambridge University’s finest, and to return home inspired with new ideas from what they have seen and heard here.”
